Upwork Fees & BIR 8% Tax: The Ultimate 2026 Freelance Guide

Published on May 31, 2026

Earning dollars as a freelancer in the Philippines is the dream. But when you land a $1,000 project on Upwork, you aren't actually taking home $1,000. Not even close.

Between platform fees, terrible bank conversion rates, and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), your actual take-home pay is significantly lower. Here is a breakdown of the three "silent killers" of your freelance income.

1. Upwork Flat 10% Service Fee

Previously, Upwork used a sliding scale (20%, 10%, 5%) depending on how much you billed a client over a lifetime.

As of their recent updates, Upwork now charges a flat 10% freelancer service fee on all contracts. If you bill $1,000, Upwork immediately takes $100. You are left with $900 in your Upwork balance.

2. The Forex Spread (The Hidden Bank Fee)

When you withdraw your $900 directly to BPI, BDO, or UnionBank, you will not get the exchange rate you see on Google.

Local banks typically apply a "Foreign Exchange Spread" — a hidden fee where they give you an exchange rate that is ₱0.50 to ₱1.00 lower than the real market rate. If the Google rate is ₱58.00, your bank might only give you ₱57.20.

For a $900 withdrawal, a ₱0.80 spread means you lose another ₱720 in hidden conversion fees!

3. The BIR 8% Flat Tax Rate

If you are a registered professional in the Philippines under the TRAIN Law, you have the option to pay a flat 8% Income Tax Rate on gross receipts instead of using the complicated graduated tax brackets.

The good news: The first ₱250,000 you earn per year is completely tax-exempt.

The catch: The 8% tax applies to your gross Philippine Peso receipts. You must manually set aside 8% of every paycheck you receive above the 250k threshold, or you will face massive penalties during the April tax deadline.
