If you work the graveyard shift at a BPO, call center, or any company that operates at night, you are entitled to Night Differential (ND) Pay — an additional premium on top of your regular hourly rate.
Despite being one of the largest industries in the Philippines, many BPO workers still don't know how much extra they're actually earning for working night shifts. Let's break it all down.
What is Night Differential?
Under Article 86 of the Philippine Labor Code, any employee who works between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM is entitled to receive an additional 10% of their regular hourly rate for every hour of night work.
The Formula
Night Differential Pay = Hourly Rate × Number of ND Hours × 10%
For example, if your hourly rate is ₱144.23 and you work 7 hours within the ND window (10PM-6AM):
ND Premium = ₱144.23 × 7 × 0.10 = ₱100.96
This ₱100.96 is added on top of your regular shift pay.
How It Stacks with Holidays and Rest Days
Night Differential doesn't exist in isolation. If your night shift falls on a holiday or your rest day, the premium multipliers stack:
| Day Type | Base Multiplier | ND Rate | |---|---|---| | Regular Day | 100% | +10% of hourly | | Rest Day | 130% | +10% of 130% rate | | Special Non-Working Holiday | 130% | +10% of 130% rate | | Special Holiday + Rest Day | 150% | +10% of 150% rate | | Regular Holiday | 200% | +10% of 200% rate | | Regular Holiday + Rest Day | 260% | +10% of 260% rate |
This means if you work a night shift on a Regular Holiday, your ND premium is based on your doubled rate, not your base rate!
Common Questions
Does ND apply to all employees?
Yes. Under DOLE rules, night differential applies to all employees regardless of position or pay structure, unless you fall under specific exemptions (managerial employees, field personnel, and domestic workers are exempt under Art. 82).
Is Night Differential taxable?
Yes. ND pay is considered part of your regular compensation and is subject to withholding tax and mandatory contributions (SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG).
What about overtime during night shift?
If you work overtime (beyond 8 hours) during a night shift, the overtime premium (25% for regular days) stacks with the ND premium. You get both.
